What are Neuropsychological Evaluations?

Neuropsychological evaluations are used to assess neurocognitive function. Their goal is to identify the cause of changes in cognitive abilities and provide appropriate recommendations for supporting a person’s recovery and support one’s highest level of independent functioning.

These evaluations are beneficial to individuals who are experiencing changes in cognitive functioning such as memory loss, difficulty with attention and concentration, problems with executive functions, and changes in language abilities and hand-eye coordination. These evaluations can be beneficial to someone who has a head injury, who is slowing down from age, who has a medical history that impacts their cognitive abilities, and/or is undergoing any concerning changes in cognition.

The evaluation process varies based on the individual’s concerns. The initial evaluation is a 60 to 90-minute assessment interview with a neuropsychologist, in which an individual will review in detail their concerns and symptoms, as well as review their personal medical and psychosocial history. A follow-up evaluation appointment will be scheduled, if appropriate, to assess the patient's cognitive ability.

The duration of testing varies based on the individual’s concerns and tolerance for testing. Evaluations can take 4 to 8 hours and if necessary, can be broken up over multiple days to accommodate fatigue. When the testing is complete, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to go over the results of the evaluation with a neuropsychologist.
